How to overcome HTC MyTouch Android USB Debug problem

So you connected your new MyTouch to your PC before enabling USB debugging on the device? Big mistake, but fortunately not a fatal one.

Credit for this solution goes to Open Mob here are steps that re-enabled USB debugging on my MyTouch phone:

  1. Connect the phone to the PC’s (mine is running XP Professional)  USB port
  2. Open “Explorer” and navigate to the removable drive (E:\ in my case)
  3. Right click the drive letter (I said “right-click”)
  4. Select Properties->Hardware
  5. Highlight diver that say HTC MyTouch USB, do right-click->Properties
  6. Remove the driver
  7. Disconnect the phone
  8. In your computer: Start->Run and type “regedit” (no quotes)
  9. This will start Registry  editor
  10. Big, fat warning: back up your registry before messing with keys, don’t tell me I didn’t warn you
  11. Edit->Find and type in “vid_0bb4&pid_0c02″ (no quotes)
  12. Now – you will have to remove all matching entries, don’t stop on first one. In my case I had 4 different locations.
  13. Some entries may bark back and say “cannot remove”. Then do right-click and modify permissions (if you have administrative privileges) to “full access”
  14. Close the registry editor when no matching keys left
  15. I recommend to reboot machine at this point. I did
  16. Now – very, very important! In your phone go Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging
  17. Connect your phone to PC, hopefully at this point you will get prompt from Windows asking for driver
  18. Select “I will choose driver myself”. DO NOT search or you will have to do this whole thing again
  19. On the follow-up screen navigate to <Android SDK>\usb_driver\x86 folder (there will be “Browse” button)
  20. That should install Android USB drivers and next time you try to debug in Eclipe it should go straight to your phone. Mine did

How do you get to Android Settings if you can’t get past the Welcome to T-mobile G1 screen? I’ve been writing a small geocaching application and testing in the emulator. Now I want to load the .apk on the android. Is it possible to use the microSD to force anything?
    Thanks

Hey Tom, I just noticed your comment. If you can't go pass the welcome screen you have a bigger problem than the one I'm solving in this post. I would recommend posting to Android Developer Group http://is.gd/4iE0r

I don't think it can be done. Good idea for the app though

this really sucks! all i get when i follow the steps is "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." (using mytouch3g with latest cyanogenmod)

this is one of the hardest things i've ever searched for, too…hardly any answers out there matching my exact problem

I'd be very greatful if someone would forward a copy of the sdk android usb driver to me. I'm running W7, so I can't load sdk myself – not compatible.

    Much thanks

    okay…
"Connect your phone to PC, hopefully at this point you will get prompt from Windows asking for driver"
    ^this didn't happen.
    now what?

Awesome, worked perfectly! Weird thing is it didn't even let me get to the point where I choose my driver, but I've rebooted a few times and it's still finding my phone without having to restart my phone once (which was the annoying problem). Thanks, now I won't look like a jerk in front of clients =)

  11. CaliChili says

    Boo, didn't work after all.

there is no usb_driverx86 folder in my android sdk…. which sdk is this in?

I installed the HTCSyncv3.0.5579.exe program so that I could get my email & phone book working. When I plug in the My touch 3g all I get is a picture of a usb device and it won't even let me open up that! I Thought this would fix thing so I could sink but no.
I thought windows was bad but now android seems even worse. What happened to the idea of plug and play? I have spent many hours now in plug and no play. What is this android STK thing?
Anyway – I had debugging set to on when I connected my phone. Still did not work.
I am uninstalling the drivers (from the start, all programs, HTC)
Then I am uninstalling the HTC sync program itself.
Then I will prob. do the regedit thing and start all over again :(
    Yuck

Hi. thanks for ideea . But it could be more simple ( not to delete from registry etc), just go to computer management, select the lemmon symbol then upgrade. Go to sdktools>extras>google.usb_driver and voila the new ADP is installed.
